Summary: | 1-Bromo-2-chloroethane (CASRN 107-04-0) belongs to the class of compounds known as halogenated alkanes. 1-Bromo-2-chloroethane currently has no commercial uses, but small amounts may be imported and used for research and development (U.S. EPA, 2015b). It is listed under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) Significant New Use Rule (SNUR), which requires notification of the U.S. EPA prior to manufacturing, importing, or processing of a chemical substance for a significant new use (e.g., commercial purpose) (U.S. EPA, 2015c). Former uses of 1-bromo-2-chloroethane include as a solvent for cellulose esters and ethers, in organic synthesis, and as a fumigant for fruits and vegetables (Lewis and Hawley, 2007). 1-Bromo-2-chloroethane is listed on TSCA's public inventory (U.S. EPA, 2015a), but it is not registered with Europe's Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) program (ECHA, 2015)
