Description
Summary:In this book, Richard Dien Winfield builds upon Hegel’s Aesthetics to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the individual fine arts, which remedies Hegel's inconsistencies and major omissions. In addition to conceiving the general aesthetics and particular stylistic forms of architecture, sculpture, painting, music, and literature, Winfield determines the fundamental character of the new arts of photography and cinema that the master thinkers of aesthetics never had the opportunity to consider. Winfield’s analysis covers a wide-ranging array of artistic creations from diverse periods and cultures, while engaging in debate with the most important aesthetic theorists of the past and present. Richard Dien Winfield is Distinguished Research Professor of Philosophy at the University of Georgia, where he has taught since 1982. He received his BA from Yale College, his MA from the University of Heidelberg, and his PhD from Yale University. This is Winfield’s 24th book of philosophy. Winfield ran for the US House of Representatives in 2018 and the US Senate in 2020 to represent the state of Georgia on a Job Guarantee Social Rights Agenda. He is married to Sujata Gupta Winfield and is the father of three adult children
