Summary: | Primary education is compulsory in Singapore. The six-year program focuses on developing language and numeracy skills, as well as building character. English, mathematics, and mother tongue language are the core subjects, and students also take additional subjects such as art, character and citizenship education, music, social studies, and physical education. Science is introduced in the third year. After the fourth year, students are streamed and can take science and the core subjects at either foundation or standard levels. Higher mother tongue language is also available to students who perform well in that subject. At the end of primary school, students take a leaving examination that helps to place them in a secondary program that matches their aptitude and pace of learning
