|a This technology assessment report on intensive glycemic control and self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus is prepared by the Tufts-New England Medical Center Evidence-based Practice Center (Tufts-NEMC EPC) for a Medicare Evidence Development and Coverage Advisory Committee (MedCAC) meeting. The primary goal of the report is to describe the applicability of the larger, long-duration studies to the nondialysis Medicare population (i.e., people at least 65 years old). The specific questions addressed are described in the Methods chapter (Chapter 2). The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) also requested a brief narrative review of diabetes (both type 1 and type 2), its epidemiology in the US, complications due to the disease and its treatment, intensive glycemic control, and patient monitoring of glycemia
