|a 2012 was more than just an election year -- while much of America was following the political news related to the looming presidential election, a sinister force was making its presence felt across the country. The summer of 2012 marked the biggest national outbreak of West Nile virus since 2002. In all, 2,873 cases of West Nile neuroinvasive disease, the most severe manifestation of the virus, were reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), including 286 deaths
