Summary:This study explores the influences of German theology - especially mediating theology - on nineteenth century Reformed theology in the United States. It pays particular attention to theological method and the doctrine of atonement in light of modernism and scientific theories. It examines German influences on the Mercersburg theologian Emanuel Vogel Gerhart (1817-1904) and Princeton's Charles Hodge (1797-1878), and shows how they engaged with the ideas of their German counterparts to reformulate existing theological definitions and methods, resulting in an active period of cross-fertilisation in theology
