They are reprinted from "Letters from General Washington, to several of his friends in the year 1776," London, 1777. In many copies of the 1796 edition a sheet was inserted containing a letter from Washington, dated March 3, 1797, denying the authenticity of these first seven letters. Cf. Ford, W.C.
