A dissertation on scripture imprecations in order to vindicate the sacred writers in general, and the Psalmists in particular, against the heavy, but happily ill-founded Charge, of indulging and countenancing a malevolent Spirit*. With a preliminary discourse to the book of Psalms, as translated, paraphrased, or imitated by the most eminent English poets, viz. Addison, Blacklock, Brady, Carter, Daniel, Denham, Doddridge, Merrick, Milton, Roscommon, Rowe, Sowden, Steelf, Tate, Tollet, Watts, and several others; and adapted to Christian worship, in a Form, the most likely to give general Satisfaction; particular Care having been taken, throughout the whole compilation, to seclude all exceptionable Words and Phrases, and to retain such only as sincere and candid Christians, of various Sentiments and different Denominations may join in the Use of.
