Summary:Book five of the Greek Anthology gathers 310 epigrams united by their erotic subject. Taking the adjective “erotic” literally, it comprises both compositions of sexual theme and intention, with a more or less disguised obscene language, and others where a more or less violent expression of love can be read, similar to the one that would be found in medieval Iberian bards. Apart from a small group of epigrams that resort to Greek mythology, the poems address the most frequent and timeless symptoms and complains of the in loved subject, the often-contradictory feelings inspired by an Eros that Posidippus straightforwardly defines as bittersweet (num. 134).
