Description
Summary:The textbook should be most useful as a guide in the encounter with AIDS patients in daily clinical practice
In less than three decades, AIDS has become one of the most devastating illnesses in human history. The AIDS epidemic differs from most other diseases in many ways, has challenged conventional medical thinking and has broadened the boundaries of knowledge of human biology and medicine. The patterns of disease and pathological changes seen in AIDS patients can be perplexing and challenging, particularly in the Medical Imaging department. As the epidemic continues to spread, AIDS patients are no longer confined to a few specialized AIDS hospitals, and are now seen in general hospitals and clinics everywhere. Therefore there is a need for an AIDS imaging textbook that is not only comprehensive, but also practical and easy to apply to daily clinical problem solving. In this book a review has been presented of the current knowledge about the wide range of manifestations in AIDS and how the role of modern medical imaging techniques and diagnosis in treatment can be applied.
Each chapter is written by leading experts from major AIDS hospitals i a variety of centers throughout North America and Europe. The book consists of a review of basic medical sciences as they apply to AIDS, the clinical imaging features of AIDS (organized by body system), central nervous system, lumenal gastrointestinal tract, hepato-pancreatobiliary system, retroperitoneum and musculoskeletal system. Special chapters have been devoted to dermatologic AIDS-related disorders, pediatric AIDS radiology, AIDS in the tropics, AIDS-related interventional procedures and prevention of HIV transmission among health care workers. "Quick reference tables" summarize the radiological abnormalities and imaging finding in AIDS-related disease of each body system. The book has been structured so that each chapter can be read on its own, without requiring referral to other material so that clinical problems can be solved as they arise.
