The last hand-bill from Mr. Potter's friends must have removed every shadow of doubt from your mind. A certain set of men, whose complexion is too well known to need a particular description, after having long held back, for purposes to which you cannot be strangers, have at length declared openly for Mr. Potter; and have forced Sir Robert Smyth to support a cause which he detests, and a man whom he despises. Unfortunate Sir Robert Smyth! How often will he wish himself, and have reason to wish himself, beyond those Alps, where he was long supposed to have been fixed in silent retirement. "sir Robert Smyth, it is said, has now declared himself averse to Mr R-'s recommendation." Yet, this very recommendation he once most earnestly solicited. "he has united himself heart and hand in support of Mr. Potter." Heart, I deny.

• To the worthy free burgesses of the antient borough of Colchester : Gentlemen, Having been nominated at a very respectable Meeting of the Free Burgesses of Colchester, as a proper Candidate to represent this Borough in Parliament upon the present Vacancy, permit me humbly to request the Favor of your Vote and Interest at the ensuing Election. Should I be so happy as to meet with your Approbation, you may be assured that no Exertions of mine shall be wanting, to preserve the Independent Freedom of this Corporation inviolable. The Honor I have received this Day in the public Declaration of your worthy Recorder in my Favour, together with the generous Countenance of a great Part of the Body corporate, give me the most flattering Hopes of Success. Believe me Gentlemen, the Confidence you may repose in me shall never be abused. I come forward upon Independent Principles, which I pledge myself uniformly to support, and ever to stand forth in Defence of your Constitutional Rights and Liberties. • To the worthy free burgesses of the antient borough of Colchester : Gentlemen, the different Interests, of this Borough appear now settled upon a Foundation that cannot be shaken; and if you remain true to your own Principles, Success must unavoidably be the Event. The Recorder, with a respectable part of the Corporation, have declared in favor of Mr. Potter: General Honeywood has publicly patronized him: Sir Rob Smyth, your worthy Representative has declared himself averse to Mr. R-'s recommendation, and has this Day united himself Heart and Hand in support of Mr. Potter. Judge, Gentlemen, before you determine, which should be preferred, the Man who has proved to all his Independency, or the Person, nominated and supported by a Ministerial Party. The former, from his present extensive Connexion in Commercial Business, may be able to restore the a most ruined Trade of this great Borough, to its most flourishing State; the latter, from his being employed in Foreign Service renders him useless to us, probably, for the whole Term of the present Parliament. I trust therefore you will adhere to Reason, and elect Mr. Potter, as the most proper Person to represent you
